The Cubs have owned the Cardinals for most of the season – not that it’s helped much in the standings – and I’m hoping to see more of that tonight, when these two teams square up for the 9th time this season (Cubs are 6-2 against the Cardinals so far).
My attention will be squarely on Alec Mills tonight, who has made five straight starts for the Cubs, with generally solid results and peripherals: 3.65 ERA, 2.52 FIP. I don’t think he’s been quite as good as those numbers would seem to suggest, but he has gotten the first two outs of the sixth inning in each of his last two games and it’s not like he didn’t find some success last season. I don’t know if Alec Mills will be a permanent fixture in the rotation for the foreseeable future (the swing role may ultimately suit him best), but I sure am happy to give him the opportunity to prove otherwise.
And, hey, if he can keep limiting the walks and getting so many groundballs, maybe there is a long-term spot for him in the Cubs rotation. Go Cubs.
