The Cubs are on the verge of being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers, who’ve already clinched their fourth straight playoff appearance this season, but haven’t yet claimed the division. Fortunately, with a magic number of 3, that can’t happen in front of the Cubs today, no matter what happens elsewhere.
Schadenfreude: The Brewers host the Cardinals next, so they’ll be the team in all the clinching highlights.
The Cubs, who’ve lost four in a row, have maintained their 8th overall spot in the reverse standings, with a 1.0 game deficit “behind” the Twins for the seventh pick and a 1.5 game “lead” over the Royals for the 9th pick. Remember we’ll be happy as long as the Cubs don’t drop down to 11th, where their pick is bumped back a spot to 12th because of the Mets inability to sign their first round pick in this most recent draft. So … Go Cubs, but not too much.
Oh, final note: Keegan Thompson, fresh of the IL, has replaced Adrian Sampson as the starter this afternoon. He’ll throw to Austin Romine, with Nico Hoerner at shortstop.
