As reported earlier, Cubs minor league utility man Trent Giambrone is coming up to the big league team for tonight’s game, and I say good for him.
He’s taking the place of Patrick Wisdom, which we thought was possible, but maybe not for the reason he is ultimately out? That is to say, Wisdom, who’d been day-to-day with a wrist issue, is going on the IL without an injury designation. Which is odd, and does suggest it is COVID-related:
Because Wisdom’s IL move does not have an injury distinction, Cubs didn’t have to make a 40-man move for Giambrone.

With no 40-man move required, it pretty much has to be a COVID IL situation (since guys on the COVID IL don’t count against the 40-man roster limit). Hopefully Wisdom is all right, and those around him and the team are all safe.
I expect there will be some follow-up here. We’ll update if and when that happens.
UPDATE: Turns out Giambrone was coming up for Nico Hoerner, whose season is indeed probably over:
Giambrone was already in Pittsburgh to take Hoerner’s place on roster when Wisdom issue arose. Club pivoted to different roster move.
