Keegan Thompson is getting his first start of the season today, and I’m both excited for and dreading the entire experience.
Thompson has been so impressive as a multi-inning reliever all season, but he’s had much less success as a starter in the past, when he’s been forced to hold a bit back and think about the second and third time through the order a little more seriously. His future may still lie in the rotation, but you just hate to mess with a good thing. Personally, I hope he treats this outing as more of a one-off opportunity as an opener than any sort of audition for the rotation.
Though to that end … is this just a one-off shot? The Cubs could’ve started Mark Leiter Jr. (just recalled) with Thompson as the bulk guy, but they didn’t. And with Marcus Stroman and Justin Steele are both hurt, there could be a chance for him to take more than one start in a row (even with the return of Wade Miley). I guess we’ll see. Go Cubs.
