Update 2: Game on.
It’s a battle of the lefties today at Wrigley Field, as Madison Bumgarner takes on Justin Steele.
Steele is coming off a brilliant start against these very Diamondbacks last weekend (6.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 10Ks), though it’s not usually beneficial for the pitcher to face the same lineup twice in short order.
Meanwhile, although Bumgarner’s results this season have been phenomenal (2.29 ERA), the underlying statistics are troubling: 14.3K%, 9.5BB%, 38.4 hard%, 37.3 groundball rate. And he’s benefiting from a ridiculous .222 BABIP and 82.4 strand rate. None of that is going to last. The Cubs *can* get to him.
Or, at least, a normal Cubs lineup can. But today’s group is … an eclectic one. And I can’t help but feel this is correct:
