It was nice of ESPN to grab this game into primetime (and away from the Bears game).
We’ve got a rubber match at Wrigley Field, with the veteran Wade Miley on the mound for Chicago, I’m guessing with Hayden Wesneski waiting in the wings for his second big league appearance. These two did the piggy back thing five games ago and it went as well as you could hope for both, relatively speaking.
Miley: 4.0 IP, 2H, 2ER, 2BB, 6Ks
Wesneski: 5.0, 2H, 0ER, 1BB, 8Ks
Obviously Wesneski was the greater story in that one, but Miley had been out since June before that start, and I was happy enough with that performance for his first game back. But that’s exactly what divides my emotions today. I feel like rooting for an early Miley blow up so we get to see Wesneski in an extended outing again. He’s a starter long term, but the Cubs may choose to keep exposing him out of the pen for now.
Either way, John Brebbia is “starting” for the Giants, though he’s actually an opener. He’s had an effective season (2.93 ERA) so I probably wouldn’t bet the over on first inning runs.
