I still like Javier Assad as a depth starter for the Cubs going forward, but it was not his day today. The control was periodically non-existent, with far too many non-competitive balls out of the hand. That led to walks, runs, and general inefficiency. It took Assad 62 pitches to get through just two innings.
The bullpen did a great job holding the Rockies down from there, but the four runs Assad allowed was already too much.
No help from blue in the 9th inning attempt at erasing the one-run deficit, by the way:
