Dang. No secret here that I’d hoped the Cubs would be the team ready to take on the high-upside risk that is Andrew Heaney, but it sounds like it won’t happen.
The Rangers are going MAXIMUM RISK this offseason:
With Heaney and Jacob deGrom, the Rangers’ rotation could be pretty dominant up front … or they could get almost no innings from those two. Risk and reward to the max.
I’ll be fascinated to see what the deal ultimately is. Oh, wait, it dropped while I was typing:
Earlier reporting had Heaney with multiple three-year offers on the table and him hoping for a fourth year. I wonder if he couldn’t get that fourth year and decided instead to bet on himself. If he has a huge season and opts out, he could be in line for a muuuuch bigger payday than he is right now, given how good – but not healthy – he was in 2022.
Sounds like this could/should be it for the Rangers in the rotation, so any rumors attaching them to Carlos Rodon, Kodai Senga, Chris Bassitt and others may now be in the rearview.
