One of the Craziest Line Scores You’ve Ever Seen

I’ve very confident in that headline, because it’s certainly true for me, especially in a professional game – at Double-A, no less!

As spotted by MiLB, here’s the line score that made my eyes pop:

It has so much going for it! There’s the obvious thing, of course: seven runs but NO hits. Then there’s the second obvious thing, the fact that the team that threw a no-hitter lost … in a game they scored five runs! And then there’s the less obvious thing: all seven runs came in a single inning – the final inning! – and there was just one error in the game.

I’m trying to conjure in my mind how this could have happened before looking at precisely what DID happen.

I would not have predicted this many hit by pitches:

Angels pitching prospect Coleman Crow threw the first six scoreless, hitless innings for the Trash Pandas, and yielded the final inning (7 innings on a double-header day) to Ben Joyce. Often, Joyce is dominant, but in this one, he allowed the first four of those walks and then left after the error. Then it was up to Eric Torres to get the final out, and instead he hit the first three batters he faced. Then he walked the next guy. Hit the next guy. Mercifully, struck out the last guy to end the inning … didn’t give up a hit, though!

And there you have it. One of the wildest endings to one of the wildest games, producing one of the wildest line scores ever.
