Somehow (and this is a compliment to the Cubs, not a dis to the player), Brennen Davis has become the latest “forgotten” Cubs prospect. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still CLEARLY one of the Cubs tip-top prospects, but with Pete Crow-Armstrong leading the way, Cade Horton bursting onto the scene, and Matt Mervis knocking down the door (in addition to about 5-6 other guys in the top 75-200 range of most top prospect rankings), Brennen Davis has certainly lost some of his shininess.
His back injury last season, the early exit from the AFL, and a slow start to Triple-A this year didn’t help. But he’s certainly turned things around here lately. Even as I concede we’re talking about tiny sample sizes.
Over his first eight games at Triple-A this year, Brennen Davis struggled to get going: .103/.278/.207 (37 wRC+) with nine strikeouts in 36 plate appearances (25%).
But in his eight games since that stretch ended, Davis is slashing .355/.382/.484 (121 wRC+) with just an 11.8% strikeout rate and a homer. He also has three multi-hit games in that stretch, and has reached base eight times in his last three starts.

And here’s a look at his second homer of the season from over the weekend. He gulfs this one up from way below the zone, which makes me feel pretty good about his back (he says with no medical background whatsoever).
The “bad” stretch is still dragging his overall season numbers down, but we’re still in a microscopic sample size here on April 26. So I’m not here to make any pronouncements in one way or another, but I was just excited to see a little hot streak from one of the best prospects in the Cubs entire system.
So don’t sleep on Brennen Davis, my friends. He’s likely to impact the big league club as soon as this season.
