In Case You’ve Noticed the Absence of MLB Umpire Angel Hernández

Chicago Cubs

Recently, Codify noticed something odd about the makeup of umpiring crews around baseball: Angel Hernández wasn’t on any of ’em.

It’s the kind of thing you eventually notice, since Hernández’s name calls to mind almost weekly criticisms of his umpiring.

According to Director of Major League Umpires Randy Marsh, speaking with USA Today, Hernández has been sidelined due to a “medical matter,” and not anything performance-related. You will also recall that Hernández has been involved with an ongoing lawsuit against MLB regarding postseason games and discrimination (he says he wasn’t getting assignments because of discrimination, MLB has said it’s because he wasn’t very good).

So, there’s your answer if you’d noticed Hernández’s absence. A little part of me actually MISSES being able to lay into some terrible call of his, but that’s certainly not of primary import when you’re talking about a medical issue. Hopefully everything is ultimately all right with Hernández.
