Lefty Anthony Kay got a couple looks in the Chicago Cubs’ bullpen, but wasn’t quite able to establish himself. That made him a relatively easy choice to DFA when the Cubs needed to open up a 40-man roster spot, and then he hit the waiver wire.
There, he was claimed by the New York Mets, who are keeping him for now by way of an option to Triple-A. We’ll see if the Mets keep him on the 40-man all offseason, or if they try to pass him through waivers at some point. For the Cubs, it almost doesn’t matter that he was claimed, outside of an emergency need in the next two weeks – after being outrighted, even if he were sent to Iowa, he would’ve been a minor league free agent at the end of the season. So the Cubs were likely to lose him soon no matter what.
Kay is the third emergency depth reliever the Cubs have lost this week, with Edwin Uceta and Josh Roberson having been released. You don’t like to lose depth, but then, if the Cubs got to a point where they were relying on that trio at the big league level down the stretch, they were probably going to be in trouble regardless.
