UPDATE 2: And now they’ve decided the game cannot proceed. The Spring Breakout Game, a one-time event for the year, has been cancelled due to the rain.
UPDATE: Looks like we’re in a rain delay for about an hour, but the game is expected to go on.
Well, this is both new and cool! Last week, one of BN’s partners reached out with a unique opportunity to stream today’s Cubs-White Sox Spring Breakout game right here at Bleacher Nation! No subscription to Marquee required, no cable package needed. Just a device and an internet connection. Obviously, I said yes. And here we are.
In case what you missed what this game is all about, Brett has you covered (and Jordan Bastian has some FAQs over at Cubs.com).
This spring MLB is doing a very cool thing by pitting the top prospects from one org against the top prospects from another org in a game. It is entirely an exhibition, but it’s about as fun as it gets for prospect nerds. The event is called Spring Breakout, and the Chicago Cubs’ game this year takes place on Friday, March 15, at 4:05 p.m. CT, against the White Sox. It will be streamed live here at BN….
You can see the Cubs full roster from our earlier post on the game. But, yes, there are a bunch of top-100 types, including Pete Crow-Armstrong (No. 16), Cade Horton (No. 26), Owen Caissie (No. 47), Matt Shaw (No. 54), Kevin Alcantara (No. 65), James Triantos (No. 73), and Jefferson Rojas (technically not a top-100 type yet, but … c’mon). The Cubs are not holding back.
That’s six top-100 prospects (plus Rojas) in this game. And that’s not including their other top-100 player, Michael Busch (No. 51), who’s still with the big league team and expected to be in Chicago come Opening Day.
By contrast, the White Sox have just three top-100 prospects overall (and one of them, Drew Thorpe, was only just acquired in the Dylan Cease trade). Thorpe won’t appear in this game, but according to MLB.com, two other players in that deal, outfielder Samuel Zavala (No. 6) and right-handed pitcher Jairo Iriarte (No. 9), were both added to the roster. The White Sox top prospect, Colson Montgomery (No. 9 overall) will be playing. Still, the advantage should be there for the Cubs.
The video player is just one quick scroll down the page. And after that, I’ll include all of our usual lineup/pre-game info when it’s made available. I’ll also bump this post back to the top of the page when the game gets closer! Enjoy!

My LORD. This is so awesome. Even though we’ve actually seen plenty of these Cubs prospects this spring (most of them are near the Majors, and Craig Counsell has not been shy about starting them in the Cactus Legaue), it’s so very cool to see them all together like this. This is the sort of Cubs lineup people dreamingly scribble on their notebooks during class or into comment sections of sites like this when they’re pretending to work from home.
And I think it’s even more rare for us, Cubs fans, today, because the Cubs have an unusually large number of legit, top-100 (or top-100 adjacent) prospects. And here they all are, together, in one lineup. Incredible.
Frankly, I’m more excited about this game than the Cactus League matchup between the big league Cubs and Sox that happens an hour sooner.
There are still no starting pitchers listed for this one, but I continue to believe it’ll be Cade Horton for the Cubs, adding to the excitement. Really cool stuff.
Chicago White Sox Lineup:
- Jacob Burke, CF
- Colson Montgomery, SS
- DJ Gladney, DH
- Tim Elko, 1B
- Zach DeLoach, RF
- Bryan Ramos, 3B

- Edgar Quero, C
- Terrell Tatum, LF
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: TBD (But I’m pretty sure Cade Horton will be the one to start)
Chicago White Sox: TBD
