Cubs Farm Report | April 17, 2024: PCA Goes Yard, Cade Horton Dominates, More

Cubs Farm Report

Pete Crow-Armstrong showed some life on Tuesday with a solo home run for the Iowa Cubs, but it was Luis Vázquez who played hero for Iowa in the end. Plus, Cade Horton dominated for the Smokies once again. That and more in today’s Cubs Farm Report.

Cubs Farm Report | April 17, 2024

Triple-A Iowa Cubs (10-6)

The Iowa Cubs won 8-7 against the Louisville Bats at Principal Park. Luis Vázquez drove in two runs with a single in the ninth inning, marking Iowa’s second walk-off win this season. The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning, but Louisville extended their lead to 7-3 in the seventh inning. Iowa fought back with four runs in the final two innings to secure the win.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his second home run of the year to make it 7-4 for Louisville. In the ninth inning, David Peralta singled to bring home a run and reduce the Bats’ lead. BJ Murray Jr. also drew a walk, which set up Vázquez to knock in two runs and give the I-Cubs an 8-7 lead.

Double-A Tennessee Smokies (5-4)

The Tennessee Smokies rode four home runs to a 6-5 victory in extra innings over the Montgomery Biscuits on Tuesday. James Triantos hit one of those home runs, a game-tying nuke in the eighth inning (video below).

Cade Horton turned in an excellent start for the Smokies, throwing four scoreless innings of one-hit baseball while striking out five and walking one. In his last 10 starts at the Double-A level (dating back to last season), Horton owns a sub-two ERA, a sub-one WHIP, a strikeout rate north of 30 percent, and a walk rate under 10 percent. Brett had more on Horton and what comes next earlier today.

High-A South Bend Cubs (3-7)

In a matchup against the Beloit Sky Carp, the South Bend Cubs initially took a commanding 4-0 lead. Nick Hull, the Cubs’ starting pitcher, showed early dominance, striking out five batters in a row before falling apart in the third inning, allowing nine runs (six earned) on five hits and three walks.

Yohendrick Pinango‘s impressive home run and subsequent RBI hits contributed to the Cubs’ early lead. However, the momentum shifted in the third inning when Beloit’s Josh Zamora hit a home run off Hull, sparking a comeback. Errors by the Cubs and a key three-run double by Cam Barstad allowed Beloit to take the lead 5-4, ultimately leading to an 11-5 victory for the Sky Carp.

Notable Performances

Nick Hull | 3.0 IP, 9 R, 6 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 2 HR

Kenten Egbert took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, over four innings. Andy Garriola led the Pelicans’ offense with a home run and an RBI, while Cristian Hernandez also contributed an RBI. Kannapolis utilized five pitchers, with Nick Altermatt earning the win. Matt Hogan and Albertson Asigen hit home runs for the Cannon Ballers, securing their victory. Despite a late push from the Pelicans, they couldn’t overcome Kannapolis’ lead, falling short in the eighth inning.
