Georgia lawmakers shot down the latest sports betting bill in early 2023. This means it will be another year until a decision is made by the Georgia Senate on sports betting. There is no shot of legal sports gambling, online sportsbooks, or mobile betting in 2023. Sorry but no Georgia sports betting sites until late 2024 at the earliest. A bill would have to pass early in 2024 for that to happen.
The latest 2023 legislative session ended without passing the lone sports betting bill HB 237. This means sports betting in Georgia is still illegal and not an option for bettors looking to wager on the top sports franchises and college sports. The state has filed a new bill that will hopefully legalize sports betting in the state, SB 386. On Tuesday, Senate Resolution 579 was passed by the Georgia Senate which is a positive step in the right direction in correspondence with it’s enabling legislation, Senate Bill 386 mentioned above.
Another constitutional amendment to legalize sports betting and retail casino gambling (Senate Resolution 537) has passed through the state’s Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee. This update marks the second bill that’s floating around in Georgia.
The two sports betting bills mentioned above, SB 386 and SR 579, did not pass through the Georgia House Rules Committee. Therefore, the next time they will be able to discuss the legalization of sports betting in the state will be in 2025.
There has been a strong push to make online sports betting a reality in the state but it has continued to fail. Sports betting in Georgia has strong support from professional sports teams but the legislative efforts to legalize sports betting have still failed.
Daily Fantasy Sports in Georgia
Daily Fantasy Sports are unregulated in the state but players can join contests with top DFS operators like FanDuel or DraftKings. Georgia came close to legalizing DFS back in 2017 but it wasn’t brought to a vote. For now, current leadership seems fine with it operating without a specific law in place.
