Maine Online Sports Betting

Online gambling and sports betting is taking off across the country. States are starting to legalize sports betting and the top sportsbooks are fighting for new customers. What about in Maine? Can you bet on sports in Maine? Here’s what you need to know about Maine online sports betting.

Yes. Sports betting is legal in the state of Maine but it is currently not available. Maine may soon see the arrival of up to four online sportsbooks and 10 sportsbook locations, as per the law that allows for such a number of licenses. The four federally recognized tribes in Maine are eligible to provide online sportsbooks, with each license allowing for a single skin.

Online Sports Betting in Maine

LD 585 was passed by Maine lawmakers and the sports betting bill became active in August 2022. The bill allows for retail, mobile sports betting, and online sports betting in the state. As of now, there is still some back and forth about the initial proposed rules and online betting is tracking more toward 2024 despite talk of a legal sports betting launch during the summer of 2023.

Sports bettors will have to wait for their favorite online sportsbook and the official launch of legal sports betting in Maine. They can hopefully expect to see mobile sports betting apps to wager on their favorite college and professional sports teams in 2024.

The Latest on Maine Sports Betting Bill and Launch

As of August 2022, Maine’s gambling laws have allowed for the legalization of sports betting and wagers, but it has also placed a heavy responsibility on the Maine Gambling Control Unit. Drafting proposed sports betting rules to manage wagers for both online and in-person sportsbooks took regulators several months, and the finalized version was only released in January 2023.

However, the MGCU’s work is not done yet as they must now navigate through a multitude of comments in three different stages, carefully considering and approving or rejecting each one. With the potential for numerous comments to come in, the launch date for retail and online sports betting may be delayed. There’s a sports betting law, but details need to be worked out before we officially see sports betting coming to Maine.

March 8, 2023: Maine Gaming Control Unit director Milton Champion believes Maine would be lucky to have sports betting up by January 2024.

February 3, 2023: Sports betting regulators in the state face pushback on Maine’s sports betting advertising restrictions.

January 9, 2023: Maine Gaming Control Unit released its proposed rules for sports betting, and public hearings were scheduled for January 31.

August 8, 2022: Maine’s sports betting law officially went into effect. Legal retail and online sports betting in the state is legal.

Bet Types and Betting Markets for Maine Sports Betting

While everything with legal sports wagering gets worked out, bettors can take a look at the popular bet types they will likely see in the state. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most popular bet types bettors will see at Maine Sportsbooks.

Moneylines

A moneyline bet is a wager on which team will win the game straight up. You’re betting on the winner. Favorites are usually listed with negative odds while an underdog will have positive odds.

For example, you check betting odds and see the New England Patriots are -120 favorites vs the Bears. If the Patriots are victorious, it would take a $120 bet to win $100.

Point spreads

When you make a point spread bet, you’re betting on the margin of victory or defeat. Each team is given a point value to balance the odds. Point spreads allow you to bet on either team, even if one is heavily favored to win.

For example, you might see the Boston Celtics are a -10.5 point favorite vs the Chicago Bulls. To cover the spread, the Celtics need to win by 11 points or more.

Betting lines for point spreads usually come with odds around -110 on both sides. A $110 bet would win $100. Point spreads are one of the most popular bet types.

Totals

When you make a total bet, it’s also known as an over/under bet. You’re betting on the total number of points that both teams will score in the game. The sportsbook will set a line on how many points they think will be scored.

For example, the total for the Boston Red Sox vs Chicago Cubs game is 7.5 runs. For an over bet to win, at least eight runs or more need to be scored in the game. If the game ended 6-4, it would be an over because 10 total runs were scored.

Props

A prop bet is a wager on a specific outcome within a game. Keep in mind, the outcome is not necessarily tied to the final result. Some people find these bets more enjoyable. Sportsbooks offer props on different outcomes for players, teams, and games.

There are a variety of outcomes such as how many points a player will score, how many rebounds a player will have, how many touchdowns a QB will throw for, and more. For example, Mac Jones might have his over/under for passing yards set a 272.5. You are betting whether he will be over or under that mark in the game.

Futures

A futures bet is looking at an event or outcome down the road. Betting on which team will win the championship or what player will win the NBA MVP. These odds change throughout the year based on performance, injuries, and more. You can track futures of major sports teams and players on the top online sites throughout the year.

Parlays

A parlay bet is when you combine multiple outcomes into one single bet slip. This gives you a boost in odds but comes with a catch. To win a parlay, all of the bets have to win. With each leg you add to the parlay, the probability of winning the bet goes down.

For example, you can select three NFL teams each to win on a Sunday in the fall. If any of the teams lose, your bet loses. If all the teams win, you receive your payout based on the odds.
