The Greatest Spectacle in Racing returns this weekend as Indy Car hits the hallowed grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indy 500 lineup welcomes one of NASCAR’s top talents to the mix and is primed for another epic chapter in open-wheel history. The 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 is upon us, and the anticipation is electric. Buckle up as we get you ready for the white-knuckled drama, the heart-stopping speeds, and the legendary tradition that is the Indy 500.
Indy 500 Lineup: How the Staring Grid was set
Indy 500 qualifying was a white-knuckled 2-day event that took place on Saturday, May 18th, and Sunday, May 19th. The first day featured every Indycar Series driver attempting to qualify for the race with their best 4-lap run. The Top 30 from this session automatically earned a spot in the race with positions 13-30 being set for the Indy 500.
Day two of Indy 500 Qualifying is where the pressure skyrocketed. The Top 12 qualifiers from the day before hit the track again, seeking a spot in the Fast Six where the Pole would be awarded. Even more exhilarating and terrifying for drivers and teams is Last Chance Qualifying. Here, the drivers who didn’t make the Top 30 on Saturday, all compete for the final 3 spots in the Indy 500 lineup. Find out who won the Pole and the entire Indy 500 lineup below.
Indy 500 Lineup: Penske Dominance
Penske Racing showed its might during Fast Six Qualifying this past weekend grabbing the top 3 spots. Topping the speed chart was New Zealander Scott McLaughlin, who posted a 4-lap average of 234.220. His Penske teammates Will Power and Josef Newgarden were just three and four-tenths off his pace with Alexander Rossi the only other driver above 233 MPH.
The talk of the weekend in racing circles has been NASCAR’s Kyle Larson. He is looking to complete the fabled “Double” by competing in the Indy 500 and in Charlotte where he’s the Coca-Cola 600 odds favorite, on the same day. He has not disappointed during his Indy Car debut, routinely showing speed in practice, and ultimately qualifying 5th for the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500. Making his second straight Indy 500 Fast Six and rounding out the top qualifiers is A.J. Foyt driver Santino Ferrucci.
