NFL Head Coach News: Second Interviews Starting, Quinn, Payton, and Evero All Hot Candidates

With four more teams eliminated from the playoffs this past weekend, a handful of coordinators in demand can focus on interviews. The latest on the head coaching news around the league includes Dan Quinn, Sean Payton, and Ejiro Evero has hot names.

With teams now conducting second interviews, it seems like the field of candidates has narrowed, and we may start to see some dominos fall soon. Here’s where each of the five head coaching openings stands as of this morning.

Cardinals Head Coach Job

The Arizona Cardinals have scheduled a second interview with Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. The Cardinals met with Quinn last weekend virtually, and with the Cowboys eliminated from the playoffs, Quinn will be flying to Arizona for an in-person interview.

The Cardinals also have an interview scheduled with Sean Payton. Payton’s interview with Arizona is set for January 26.

Arizona has also interviewed the following candidates:

  • Ejiro Evero (Broncos DC)
  • Brian Flores (Steelers LB Coach)
  • Aaron Glenn (Lions DC)
  • Vance Joseph (Cardinals DC)
  • Frank Reich (Former Colts HC)
  • DeMeco Ryans (49ers DC)
  • Panthers Head Coach Job

The Panthers completed an interview with former Saints head coach Sean Payton on Monday. Carolina will interview Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore today.

The Panthers also interviewed Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey over the weekend.

The Panthers have cast a wide net thus far, with interviews requested or completed with the following candidates:

  • Sean Payton (Former Saints HC)
  • Kellen Moore (Cowboys OC)
  • Ken Dorsey (Bills OC)
  • Ejiro Evero (Broncos DC)
  • Shane Steichen (Eagles OC)
  • Frank Reich (Former Colts HC)
  • Steve Wilks (Interim HC)
  • Mike Kafka (Giants OC)
  • Jim Caldwell (Former Lions, Colts HC)
  • Broncos Head Coach Job

The Broncos are believed to be looking for an experienced football voice to replace rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Denver has interviewed DC Ejiro Evero, flirted with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, and recently interviewed Dan Quinn.

Denver has a second interview lined up with Sean Payton on Wednesday. It seems like Denver is going the way of defense, with the majority of their search list coming from a defensive background.

The Broncos have spoken with or requested to speak with the following candidates:

  • Ejiro Evero (Broncos DC)
  • Dan Quinn (Cowboys DC)
  • Sean Payton (Former Saints HC)
  • David Shaw (Former Stanford HC)
  • Raheem Morris (Rams DC)
  • DeMeco Ryans (49ers DC)
  • Texans Head Coach Job

The Texans are searching for their third head coach in as many years after firing Lovie Smith. Houston recently completed an interview with 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. The Texans have also interviewed former Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Here’s what the Texans list of candidates looks like right now:

  • DeMeco Ryans (49ers DC)
  • Thomas Brown (Rams Assistant HC)
  • Ejiro Evero (Broncos DC)
  • Sean Payton (Former Saints HC)
  • Shane Steichen (Eagles OC)
  • Jonathan Gannon (Eagles DC)
  • Mike Kafka (Giants OC)
  • Colts Head Coach Job

Indianapolis still considers interim head coach Jeff Saturday, a candidate for the permanent job. Saturday replaced Frank Reich on November 7.

The Colts recently completed interviews with Dan Quinn (January 20), and Jeff Saturday (January 19). They also requested to speak with Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.

Here’s who remains in the running for the Colts job:

  • Jeff Saturday (Colts Interim HC)
  • Dan Quinn (Cowboys DC)
  • Brian Callahan (Bengals OC)
  • Wink Martindale (Giants DC)
  • DeMeco Ryans (49ers DC)
  • Mike Kafka (Giants OC)
  • Raheem Morris (Rams DC)
  • Aaron Glenn (Lions DC)
  • Shane Steichen (Eagles OC)
  • Eric Bieniemy (Chiefs OC)
  • Bubba Ventrone (Colts STC)
