A troubling story is developing in Maywood, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, late Saturday evening. Former NFL player Sergio Brown is missing, and his 73-year-old mother’s body was located by local authorities on Saturday afternoon.
According to local authorities, Brown has been reported missing by family members, who have not been able to contact him since sometime Friday. The body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, was found in Addison Creek near her home in Maywood on Saturday afternoon.
As of late Saturday afternoon, Maywood police and surrounding suburban agencies were on scene searching the Addison Creek and investigating the area. Early Saturday, family members attempted to contact the Maywood Police Department and the neighboring Melrose Park Police Department — through which that section of the creek also runs — to report the son and mother missing.
On Saturday, Nick Brown, Sergio’s brother, and Myrtle’s other son, asked friends for help locating the pair on Facebook.
Brown, 35, played football at Proviso East High School in Maywood and at Notre Dame. He later signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Brown played safety in the NFL for six seasons, making stops in New England, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Buffalo before retiring in 2016.
Brown’s Instagram shows that he hosted a local youth football camp at Proviso East High School in July.
Police are still investigating. Community members with information can report it to the Maywood Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (708) 450-1787.
