Seattle Seahawks 2024 NFL Draft Grade: Sharpening Their Talons with Byron Murphy II

The Seahawks set sail on a course for improvement in the 2024 NFL Draft. With a new head coach in Mike Macdonald at the helm, the draft strategy focused on shoring up both sides of the ball. Did they find the anchors and weapons needed to navigate the treacherous waters of the NFC West? Let’s unfurl the Seahawks’ 2024 draft class, grade it, and see how these fresh faces could reshape the fortunes of the ‘Legion of Boom’.

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2024 draft class focused on building a well-rounded team for the future that also brings immediate returns. Their anchor, defensive tackle Byron Murphy II, instantly bolsters the defensive line and solidifies the spot for years to come. While guard Christian Haynes aims to solidify protection for Geno Smith and revitalize the running game. They also addressed other top NFL Draft priorities like their linebacking corps and tight end.

This draft haul demonstrates the change in regime and a continued focus on maintaining success over the long haul. The selection of Murphy, the top interior d-lineman available, and each of their remaining picks made this particular class one of the NFL’s best. They more than passed the test and get an A draft grade.

Beefing Up The Interior

The Seattle Seahawks, under the fresh leadership of head coach Mike Macdonald, set their sights on rebuilding in the 2024 NFL Draft. Their journey began by seizing a cornerstone piece for their defense with the 16th overall pick: defensive tackle Byron Murphy II from the University of Texas. Murphy, a consensus All-American and the reigning Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year isn’t just your average rookie.  This Seahawks first-rounder boasts a rare blend of size, power, and athleticism. He can clog running lanes with his impressive frame and disrupt passing plays with his quick first step and relentless motor. Murphy’s arrival instantly bolsters the Seahawks’ defensive line, potentially forming one of the league’s best duos alongside veteran Leonard Williams.

Continuing their focus on the trenches, Seattle nabbed guard Christian Haynes out of UConn with their second selection of the draft. Haynes was a four-year starter for the Huskies and should step right into a starting role. Their third pick in the draft, UTEP linebacker Tyrice Knight was a tackling machine for the Miners and should make the transition from Bobby Wagner a little easier.

Loading Up on Value and Depth Late

Seattle’s final five picks of the NFL Draft were highlighted by Michigan TE AJ Barner and fifth-round pick, cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett from Auburn. Barner features similar traits to the departed Will Dissly, filling his shoes seamlessly. With Pritchett quite possibly being the Seahawks’ top-value pick and a player that excels in press coverage.

Building for Long-Term Success

The Seahawks’ 2024 draft class may not be brimming with immediate superstars, but it demonstrates a commitment to building a well-rounded team in the immediate and long-term future. By addressing key needs on both sides of the ball and adding depth, the Seahawks have taken a significant step towards remaining competitive in the always-challenging NFC West.
