Outright betting in the NFL

An outright bet is a bet placed on the outcome of an entire league or competition as opposed to a single bet on an individual game or event. For outright betting, you won’t be looking at a moneyline, prop bet, or point spread for a single game such as the Super Bowl.

You are checking betting odds at a sportsbook for future bets such as the Super Bowl winner or who will win Super Bowl MVP.

There are many types of outright bets for the NFL season that don’t pertain to the Super Bowl such as the regular season MVP Award or Coach of the Year. These types of bets are decided over the long haul. A future can be placed at any point from the preseason leading up to before the final event.

Types of outright betting for the Super Bowl

Online sports betting provides a lot of options for outright betting for different sports across the world. When it comes to the Super Bowl, there are some future bets you can place wagers on.

To win the Super Bowl

Each NFL team had 2023 Super Bowl odds all the way back in the preseason. At the beginning of the year, you can bet on which team you believe will win it all. At the time, teams like the Bills, Chiefs, and Buccaneers were considered Super Bowl contenders.

The odds will change throughout the NFL season based on how teams are playing. The best odds to win belonged to the Bills in the preseason at +600.

The Seattle Seahawks were +17000 and considered a long shot to even make the playoffs. If you were to place a bet on them at the beginning of the year and they won, it would pay 170 to 1.

The Kansas City Chiefs were the favorite to win heading into the playoffs. They are now +105 to win. If you bet on the Chiefs and they win the game to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, the bet would pay out 1.05 to 1.

To reach the Super Bowl

There are outright bets for a team to play in the Super Bowl. There are NFL odds for if a team will make it to the Super Bowl. Similar to odds for winning the Super Bowl, these can be listed in sportsbooks during the preseason. So if you are looking to bet on the NFL Championship Game winners, you can do it early at a sports betting site.

An online sportsbook will adjust the odds over the course of the regular NFL season as sports fans continue to place bets. Betting favorites will shift based on injuries, team play, and more.

For this type of future bet, there are two teams that will result in you winning your bet. All that matters is if the team reaches the NFL Super Bowl.

It doesn’t matter if they win the big game or not. For Super Bowl 56, bettors who placed an outright bet on the Bengals or Rams to reach the Super Bowl would have received a payout.

To win Super Bowl MVP

When the odds to win Super Bowl MVP are listed varies depending on the sportsbook. As you are looking at Super Bowl odds, you might not see Super Bowl MVP until later in the season. Sometimes a sportsbook will wait to see which teams have the best Super Bowl chances before listing odds for players.

When to place outright bets during the year

Outright and future bets can be placed even before the NFL season starts. Here are the different points throughout the year you can place a future bet on whether a team will win the Super Bowl, reach the Super Bowl, etc.

NFL Preseason

Before the season starts, all 32 teams receive odds to win the Super Bowl from the different betting markets in the country and you’ll find out bets available.

To start the 2022 season, the Bills were the favorite at +600 while the Houston Texans rounded out the bottom of the league at +29000. For the Texans, their odds of winning were not very good.

For example, in the preseason the odds for the Chiefs to win it all were +1020. Those were long odds compared to the +350 they reached before the playoffs started.

NFL Regular Season

During the regular season, odds will shift based on a team’s play, injuries, and more. You’ll find these types of odds at sportsbooks under Super Bowl odds 2023 as you try to get a gauge on who would win the big game at the end of the season.

With each NFL game that passes, the odds for some teams narrow as they show they are one of the best teams in the league.

NFL Playoffs

After the NFL playoff picture is set, 14 teams are remaining and have a shot of winning the Lombardi Trophy. You will see another shift in the odds to win the Super Bowl now that over half the league has been eliminated. With each playoff game, another team in the NFL is one step closer to winning it all.

The Super Bowl line for 2022 saw the Rams as a -4 point favorite vs the Bengals.

Other types of Super Bowl Bets

The term outright is referring to placing future bets for events down the road. It’s not the only way to bet. There are plenty of other ways to wager on the Super Bowl.

Here are a few of the popular betting options available if you want to bet on the 2023 Super Bowl.

Moneyline

Moneyline betting involves placing a bet on which team will win the game. You’ll find Super Bowl moneyline odds are listed immediately following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Championship Games for each conference.

The Eagles are -120 favorites to win Super Bowl LVII over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Point Spread

A point spread is a bet looking at the margin of victory in a game. This is an extremely popular bet to make and bettors will be pouring in their wagers for the Super Bowl in February.

For example, the Bengals were +4 underdogs in last year’s big game. They needed to lose by 3 or less or even win for the bet to cash. The Bengals lost the game 23-20. That means they covered the spread and those who backed the Bengals received a payout.

Total

A total, also called an over/under, is when you bet on how many points are scored in the game. The line is set for both teams combined. In the 2022 Super Bowl, the over/under was 48.5.

That means an over bet would need 49 or more points scored in the game. The final score ended up 23-20 which was 43 total points.

Game/Player Props

Props are increasing in popularity and starting to become part of a betting strategy for sports fans. Game and player props are wagers on outcomes not necessarily related to the result of the event. You can bet on how many passing yards a quarterback will have or who will score the first Super Bowl touchdown.

Exotic Props

Exotic props cover bets that really have nothing to do with the actual game. These are fun and don’t require much skill. It’s mostly luck. This type of prop would be bets such as the coin toss, winning team Gatorade color poured on the coach, or the first song played during the halftime performance.

Live Betting

Once the Super Bowl kicks off, betting is not over. In-game betting takes over and there are options for moneylines, spreads, totals, props, and more that are constantly changing.

The bets you can make have odds that shift quickly based on how the game is going so bettors need to stay on top of the action if they want to get a particular bet.

Outright Betting FAQs

Can I bet on who will win the Super Bowl during the regular season?

Yes. NFL teams will have odds to win the Super Bowl listed on sportsbooks throughout the season. The odds will change based on how teams are playing, injuries, and more.

What is an outright bet?

An outright bet is a futures bet where you wager on events that will take place after a specific period of time such as the end of the season, the start of the playoffs, etc. For example, you can bet on which team will win the Super Bowl before the playoffs even begin.

How does a futures bet work?

A future is a bet on an event down the road. Sportsbooks will have odds for events such as the Super Bowl, World Series, etc. long before they take place. If you bet on a specific team, those odds are locked in until the conclusion of the event.

Is outright betting profitable?

The odds for outright betting give you the shot at a higher payout but that also means they are harder to predict. Picking a Super Bowl winner at the beginning of the season can be difficult, but it comes with much better odds that are usually positive.

Do futures have a cashout option?

Yes. Most sportsbooks will let you cash out a futures bet. For example, you place a wager on the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl at the beginning of the season.

They had long odds of +17000. Now that they’ve reached the playoffs, their odds have improved to +7000. A sportsbook might have a cash-out option for you since the odds improved dramatically.
