Mitch Trubisky Wants to Be a Bear For Life

Mitch Trubisky isn’t eligible for a contract extension until next spring, but that didn’t stop the Bears quarterback from dreaming on a lengthy stay in Chicago.

When asked about the new deal Carson Wentz signed with the Eagles, Trubisky responded by expressing his desire to play the rest of his career with the Bears.

“I want to play this game as long as possible, and I want to do as long as I can here in Chicago,” Trubisky told reporters at Halas Hall. “I think we’re building something great here. I love the city. I love the fans. I love where I live. I love coming to work at Halas Hall every day. And I love my teammates. For me, it’s just take it one day at a time and embrace the process, but that’s the goal.”

OMG. So much love. Everybody breathe it in.

Trubisky still has two years remaining on his rookie deal and the Bears still hold a fifth-year option for the 2021 season, so it’s not like he is going somewhere any time soon. And yet, it’s never too early to think about what an extension could possibly look like should we get to that point. We recently discussed Wentz’s extension and touched on the possible ramifications it could have for Trubisky. Because while it’s not a priority at the moment, the Bears should be tracking how expensive the recent round of extensions have been, jotting down some numbers, and storing them away for when the time is right. Because paying Trubisky is one thing, doing so while simultaneously building a Super Bowl contender without the benefit of having a quarterback on a rookie-scale contract is another. The last thing the Bears want to do is fall into the same trap the Vikings have stumbled into with Kirk Cousins.

I suppose a hidden benefit in Wentz getting his deal done is that Trubisky and Wentz share an agent. Further, Trubisky offered up that he heard about how the deal came to be and that it was beneficial for the team and player. Of course, Trubisky stopped short of outlining his contractual desires. Though, he admits that’s not his field of expertise anyway.

“I’m not very good with the numbers and the details and the language of contracts,” Trubisky said. “I just want to play football.”

Spoken like a true grinder.

Trubisky also talked about his eagerness to return to the practice field, lessons learned from Bears100, his relationship with Head Coach Matt Nagy, and more. You’ll want to check out Trubisky’s full press conference, which has been embedded below:
