Fry finished his day of practice by making 7 of 8 attempts as part of a flurry of kicks in a sequence that started at 33 yards out and wrapped up with him making a pair of 55-yarders (one from each gah mark). Overall, he went 10-for-11 on his day to kick, which I suppose would constitute a happy Fry-day (Michael: Luis …).
Fry is now 27-for-31 on his kicks in front of fans at training camp on the campus of Oliver Nazarene University. That comes out to an 87.1 percent success rate. Not bad! Heck, I would venture to say that is pretty darn good.
Even though it is fair to point out that Fry’s success has come in (mostly) ideal summertime conditions in a low-pressure kicking situations, it is better to see kickers excel in Bourbonnais rather than falter. To take it a step further, it is good to see both kickers in camp continue to step up and nail their tries. Nothing like a constant upping of the ante to captivate an audience tuning in for a genuine training camp competition. If it continues into the preseason, that means the Bears could have a tough decision on their hands when it comes to picking the right guy for the season-opening 53-man roster.
And to think, kicking in front of 8,000+ spectators in Bourbonnais is just the tip of the iceberg. Both Fry and Eddy Piñeiro are scheduled to kick at Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field, which leaves me departing Bourbonnais curious as to how each will perform in front of what figures to be a larger audience at the home of the Bears and scene of the kick that sent us down this road in the first place.
