The Kaepernick Workout Mystery and Other Bears Bullets

Maybe I’m typing this out because I’m never awake for it, but sunrises in Los Angeles are vastly underrated.

  • Nothing encapsulates how much of a mess Colin Kaepernick’s showcase in Georgia was like this thread from ESPN’s Howard Bryant (head to Twitter to see the full long thread):
  • For what it’s worth: Vaughn McClure, who covered the Bears for the Chicago Tribune before moving to ESPN.com to write about the Falcons, spotted a Bears representative at the original location of Kaepernick’s Saturday workout. Jourdan Rodrigue (The Athletic) also made note that Chicago was among the representatives at the Falcons facility (though it is unclear if they were at the workout at the high school field where it ultimately took place).
  • There are conflicting reports on who was at the workout that ultimately took place at a high school field. The official list was not made available to the media, but McClure reports the Jets, Chiefs, Eagles, Titans, 49ers, Lions, and Redskins were in attendance. McClure adds one team was not identified, but the Kaepernick representatives said eight teams showed up. ESPN’s Adam Schefter originally reported the Bills were the eighth team, but has since heard from a Bills representative they were not on hand. An eighth mystery team is out there. Could it be the Bears?
  • Sources informed Brooks Melchior of Sports By Brooks that the Bears joined the Jets, Chiefs, Jaguars, Eagles, and Redskins at the second location. Brooks was a pioneer of modern blogging and a news-breaker when Sports by Brooks was an internet go-to before his disappearance. You should really catch up with this to get a better scope of Brooks’ importance to the sports blogging environment.
  • Anyway, I’m not sure what to make of the Bears’ appearance in Atlanta and the uncertainty of whether or not their scout was at the second location. On one hand, good on the Bears for making the original trek. GM Ryan Pace and his staff have long kept things close to the vest, so it should have come as no surprise that the team laid low and didn’t announce the intent to go to the workout. But on the other hand, I can’t come to grips with traveling all that way, then not following it all the way through. Then again, the league created a circus with all sorts of caveats and complications, and a whole lot of teams didn’t go to the second location … and I don’t think this storyline is ending any time soon.

  • Rookie running back David Montgomery is still a game-time decision to play against the Rams on Sunday Night Football, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. That’s no change from Friday, when Head Coach Matt Nagy listed him as questionable after being limited in Friday’s practice. Limited participation represented an upgrade for Montgomery, who did not practice on Thursday after being limited on Wednesday. Montgomery went from being underutilized to a key cog in this offense, so it would be great for the team if he could give it a go against the Rams.
  • If Montgomery can’t play, then things could get really tricky for the Bears’ rushing attack. With Mike Davis gone to Carolina, Chicago doesn’t have a traditional back who could be a load-carrying runner. Tarik Cohen and Ryan Nall are the only backs listed on the depth chart behind Montgomery. I suppose Cordarrelle Patterson could be used in a way the Patriots used him as a rusher last season. Perhaps Taylor Gabriel and Anthony Miller could get some action on some jet sweeps. Just thinking about an offense without Montgomery makes me imagine Nagy and the offensive brain-trust walking a tight-rope.
  • One player I can guarantee won’t be filling in for Montgomery is seventh-round pick Kerrith Whyte Jr., who is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers:
  • It is possible that the Bears were confident enough in Montgomery’s health to not feel the need to call up Whyte from the practice squad. If that happens to be the case, then I will be happy that Montgomery’s health is in a good enough spot for him to play. ON THE OTHER HAND, I’m not all that pleased with the state of the Bears’ 2019 draft class. Getting contributions from just Montgomery isn’t a great look for the Bears’ front office.
  • In case you missed it, the Bears placed Trey Burton on injured reserve. The calf injury that caused him to miss time at the end of the Lions game and kept him out of practice will put him on the shelf for the rest of the season.
  • Good to see the league offices offer up what amounts to a mea culpa on the Kyle Fuller hit that was called a penalty (though it should not have been one):
