Strikeout Saturday, Woody’s Brilliance, Schwarber’s Heart, ARod the Doctor, and Other Cubs Bullets

The back was feeling a good bit better this morning, so I started the next phase in the quick recovery process: taking a long walk with The Littlest Girl. That was very nice to get out and about – definitely appreciating simple things like “being outside” so much more than ever right now. I hope you’re all also able to do it a little bit, safely.

  • A heads up for your Saturday sports viewing:
  • The other big 20K performances are also airing today if you want to see slightly less impressive performances, too:

  • Other than Wood’s effort, Scherzer’s was the only one I watched as it was unfolding (thanks, MLB.tv). Johnson’s, in 2001, did happen during the very, very early days of MLB.tv, but I was in college and I imagine I was probably studying or something and missed it. The Wood game, I just happened to be home and watching on WGN like I was most games of that era. Lord it was awesome. One of the most intense regular season game experiences I can remember.
  • Speaking of which, this is a fantastic read from Jesse Rogers:
  • I love knowing this is how such a dominant day started:
  • Wood: “I was all over the place in warm-ups. I was erratic. Every other pitch in the bullpen, I was getting another ball because I was throwing it to the screen or bouncing it in. I didn’t throw one strike. The first pitch of the game, it didn’t change. I hit [plate umpire] Jerry Meals in the mask. I didn’t have the feel.”

Plate umpire Jerry Meals: “To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever had that happen again. It’s the first pitch of the game, so things start going through my head. ‘Is there something I need to be addressing? Is there some bad blood? How do you get crossed up on the first pitch? What the hell is going on here?'”

  • Kyle Schwarber with the big beard and the big heart:
  • Anthony Rizzo has been doing some great things to gather and provide meals for front-line healthcare workers in Chicago, and he just got a big donation from a familiar face:
  • Strip the title:
  • Normal times:
  • It’s just so ridiculous. Everyone knows if you’re going to call a baseball player for sophisticated, scientific advice, you call Kyle Hendricks or Yu Darvish.
  • Eerie, but obviously this is what needs to happen right now:
