Thank goodness for the power today, and the Patrick Wisdom insurance run late. The Cubs needed every bit of it, and the game ended with the tying run on second and lead run on first. Exhale.
Jameson Taillon was brilliant, as he more or less has been since midseason last year. As soon as he left the game – approaching 100 pitches, I get it – you felt terror, despite a 5-0 lead.
… which became a 5-4 lead in the blink of an eye. Keegan Thompson had a very, very bad day, as at least one reliever seems to be having the last couple of weeks. It turned what should have been a relatively chill win into another cardiac adventure. That’s all the more the case when the current closer, Hector Neris, is allergic to a clean inning.
It’s not feeling especially tenable, but the Cubs don’t have a ton of other options at the moment (though I hope Jed is calling the Marlins anyway).
So, yeah. Thank you today for the power, for Wisdom, for Taillon, and for Mark Leiter Jr.
