CUBS LINEUP — I don’t disagree – at all – that the Cubs have a bullpen (and specifically, an Adbert Alzolay) problem at the moment. But it’s really hard for me to even think about the bullpen when the Cubs lineup scores one run against Joe Ross over six innings. Let’s see if this group has any more luck against Tobias Myers this afternoon at Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Nico Hoerner, 2B
- Mike Tauchman, RF
- Ian Happ, LF
- Chris Morel, 3B
- Michael Busch, 1B
- Dansby Swanson, SS
- Patrick Wisdom, DH
- Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
- Miguel Amaya, C
With Matt Mervis being sent down (more on that as soon as I can get to it), the Cubs lineup has a new DH today, and it’s Patrick Wisdom. Theoretically, that’s not ideal (not only because Wisdom is inconsistent, but also because Myers is a righty). But at least Myers has reverse splits this season. The sample is tinier than tiny, so I wouldn’t really count on that, but he has given up three homers out of 22 righties faced.
Wisdom is batting seventh, one spot ahead of Pete Crow-Armstrong, who’s back up to batting 8th, with Miguel Amaya behind the plate.
Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:
- Sal Frelick, RF
- William Contreras, C
- Tyler Black, DH
- Willy Adames, SS
- Brice Turang, 2B
- Rhys Hoskins, 1B
- Oliver Dunn, 3B
- Blake Perkins, CF
- Jackson Chourio, LF
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
So far, Jameson Taillon has been nothing short of incredible for the Cubs, logging 18.0 IP over three starts with just three earned runs (1.50 ERA) and three walks. The strikeouts have been lacking, which means he’s a bit more beholden to BABIP working out in his favor, but at least he’s generating weak contact and groundballs at solid rates. Remember, his last start was that crazy-efficient, short game against the Mets in which he lasted into the 8th inning on just 78 pitches. I suspect the Brewers will be a little more patient after seeing that.
Milwaukee Brewers: Tobias Myers, RHP
Tobias Myers is a 25-year-old rookie making his third start of the season. His first start, against the Pirates, went reasonably well, with just one earned run over 5.0 IP on four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. But his followup against the Yankees was a little worse: 5.0 IP, 5H, 4ER, 0BB, 5K, 2HRs. Myers had a good three-game stretch in Triple-A this year before being promoted (1.62 ERA), but this is still a guy who had a 5.03 ERA over 26 starts as a 24-year-old in Double-A last season. At some point, the Cubs lineup needs to actually do some damage.
