Expensive Excessive Celebrations, Cutler’s Backups QBs Square Off, Throwback Bears-Lions Highlights, and Other Bullets

It’s Veterans Day, so let’s take a moment to pause, reflect, and thank the people who have served in the United States armed forces before we get to our normal football-related activities.

  • There is nothing like getting your game day started with a hype video featuring last week’s glorious highlights:
  • I hope Sunday’s Bears-Lions game doesn’t come down to history repeating itself. But if it does, I have full confidence in Tarik Cohen working his magic and pulling off something like this:
  • If you think you’re excited about Allen Robinson’s return to the lineup, think about how Mitch Trubisky must feel. Robinson was signed to be Trubisky’s top target, but that hasn’t played out just yet. However, sometimes a player’s value goes beyond his stats. Check this out: Trubisky has thrown for 688 yards, 5 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, posted an 80.7 passer rating, and completed just 54.6 percent of his passes in the three games since Robinson originally suffered his groin injury in Week 6. When Robinson was in the lineup in the first six games of the year, Trubisky posted a 105.6 rating, completed 70.2 percent of his passes, threw for 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Opponents have to account for Robinson as a primary weapon when he is in the lineup, which opens up things for others on the offense and his return should set Trubisky back on the right path.
  • Robinson caught 24 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns in his first five weeks, which put him on this 16-game pace: 77 catches, 899 yards, six touchdowns. It’s well shy of the 1,400-yard, 14-touchdown season he had with the Jaguars in 2015, but not bad for a player in his first year back from a lost year due to a shredded knee.
  • Khalil Mack is back, too. Let’s enjoy some highlights:
  • Mack has played just one game in his career against the Lions and it came in 2015, which isn’t all that long ago. But the Lions don’t have any returning starters from that offensive line, which says a lot about where that group has come in three years.
  • The Chicago Tribune takes an in-depth look at one of the most brutal stretches in Bears history, digging into the team’s woeful 6-25 record against the NFC North since the start of the 2013 season. That.194 winning percentage explains everything you need to know about why Chicago football fans have been more concerned with NFL Draft prospects than playoff positioning in recent years. Ideally, a win against the Lions represents the beginning of the end of that run of futility.
  • Before we dive into what will hopefully be a stellar second half for the Bears, Greg Gabriel of 670 The Score delivers a mid-season report card for a Bears team that has shown improvement on both sides of the ball. A 5-3 start brings all the good vibes to the table, but the Bears have to finish strong in order for it to mean anything.
  • The offense has some work to do in the second half. Matt Nagy’s crew ranks sixth in scoring average entering Sunday’s game, but 16th in yards per game. That discrepancy isn’t necessarily a red flag just yet, but something that we’ll keep an eye on. Though, I must say that going from one of the worst offensive teams as far as moving the ball is concerned to one that’s middle of the pack isn’t the worst thing in the world. And yet, I still come back to the idea that good isn’t enough when better is expected.
  • You’ve gotta be kidding:
  • Remember, Key and Peele did it first:
  • Winner gets to be known as the greatest backup in Bears history:
  • Mr. Barnwell might be onto something here:
  • You don’t see things get this ugly too often:
