OH HELLO: Bears Have “Checked in” on Top Left Tackle Trent Williams

In a free-agent class that’s loaded with offensive linemen, the Bears are angling to take a big swing at the top of the market.

Anyone intrigued by the idea of upgrading the left tackle spot?

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs hears the Bears have inquired about Williams, a top tier player at a premier position. Williams, 32, is an eight-time Pro Bowler and virtual lock for consideration among the NFL’s top-100 players on an annual basis. And even as he enters his age 33 season, Williams’ play with the 49ers in 2020 suggests he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

This isn’t the first time the Bears have been connected on the rumor mill to Williams. Back in November, a report surfaced that the Bears could re-focus their offseason energy toward rebuilding their offensive line. Among the names listed as possibilities for the Bears to re-allocate their cap space was Williams. And now that he’s hit free agency, it would only be right for Chicago to check in. There’s no secret the Bears need offensive line upgrades. And they don’t get much better than Williams, especially on the open market.

Think Russell Wilson (or any QB for that matter?) might love Trent Williams as his left tackle? Just asking…

Michael: All jokes aside, not only would adding a tackle like Williams *actually* make Wilson happy if something were to go down, putting this kind of rumor out there at this point in the process has value. It’s a reminder that the Bears WANT to improve the offensive line – in perhaps the biggest way they realistically can – a message that isn’t going to miss anyone.
