A St. Louis Cardinals Prospect Was Attacked by a Bear

Baseball is a sport storied in tradition: the postseason heroes, the memorable statistics, and, of course, the weird injuries.

The latest installment features St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Dalton Roach up in a tree in Wisconsin, doing some bow hunting, when he got attacked by a freaking bear:

Roach was up in a tree stand, trying to play it cool as the bear climbed up the tree right behind him. Only after the bear decided Roach was a snack did the 25-year-old pitcher decide he had to make a move: so he quickly turned around to make himself as big as possible, and screamed in the huge bear’s face. It worked, as the bear climbed back down and eventually left the tree.

As you can see, the damage required immediate medical attention, though Roach is expected to be all right. Bonus bear scar, too.

No jokes here, because that all sounds scary as it gets. Fortunately Roach should be good to go, both in his baseball pursuits and just life, in general. He posted a 5.65 ERA at Double-A last year, which sounds rough, though coming out of the pandemic he was bumped straight from Low-A to Double-A.
