Drew Commesso, Boston University Fall To Top-Ranked Minnesota

In the first game at the Frozen Four on Thursday evening, Boston University had their hands full with the top-ranked Golden Gophers of Minnesota. Blackhawks goaltending prospect Drew Commesso was under fire from the get-go and did everything he could to keep it close.

Unfortunately for Commesso and fellow Blackhawks prospect forward Ryan Greene, Minnesota was simply too much. The final score was 6-2, but two of the goals came with Commesso on the bench for an extra attacker. The Blackhawks’ top goaltending prospect made 28 impressive saves in the loss, which might be his final game with the Terriers.

Commesso was named the Most Outstanding Player in their regional. Greene’s successful freshman season ends with 31 points in 37 games for the Terriers.

Luke Mittelstadt and Logan Cooley scored twice each for Minnesota in a four-goal third period to skate into Saturday night’s championship game.

The question now becomes whether or not the Blackhawks will sign Commesso. They could sign him for the rest of the season, or he could start his entry-level contract next year and finish this season on an ATO with Rockford. There’s also a chance he’ll take the summer off and join the Blackhawks in training camp in September. But getting a deal done with the top goaltending prospect in the organization should be a no-brainer.
