Recapping a Very Busy Weekend: Rooftop Contract, WGN Drops Sports, Kenney Extended, More

bn-baseballIt happens every year around this time: the weekends, in terms of coverage around here, start to look a lot like the weekdays. When I grab my computer (after checking my phone) and walk away from the family (as I did frequently this weekend), I mutter, “sorry, news” and The Wife says, “Tis the season.”

Indeed it is – and if you were a better family-person than I this weekend, and missed out on the news, here’s a run-down of the biggest items so that you can catch up:

Friday, May 30

  • I’ll assume you were still around for most of the morning stuff, but one thing I don’t think you should miss, in case you weren’t: here’s a look at Jake Arrieta’s (possibly) evolving approach this year, which has made him (so far) something of a groundball stud.
  • The full Cubs/rooftops contract was revealed, and I took a lengthy former-lawyer stab at analyzing some of the issues therein.
  • WGN America is proceeding with its plan to become a full-on cable channel, which means, yes, it will be dropping local Chicago sports, including the Cubs.
  • Saturday, May 31

  • The Cardinals finally promoted top prospect Oscar Taveras (likely avoiding Super Two – not that a top-notch organization like St. Louis would worry about such a petty thing, right?), and he hit a homer in his first game. Because of course.
  • Chicago Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney revealed that he has received a five-year extension. The Cubs-related Internet world reacted with well-thought-out, well-supported, non-reactionary opinions.
  • We discussed Kris Bryant’s near-term future, and when he might finally be promoted to AAA.
  • One mock draft discussed the Cubs’ “dream scenario” – Carlos Rodon falling to four – and believes it’s actually possible.
  • Sunday, June 1

  • Top international signee from last year Eloy Jimenez was reportedly assigned to the Dominican Summer League.
  • The Cubs offered to take the bullpen relocation plan off the table for now if it’s going to be an approval problem for the overall renovation/expansion at Wrigley Field, and I dug into how things should (“should”) proceed from here.
  • Luke looked back at the 2012 draft – the first of the new CBA era, and first for the new front office with the Cubs – for instruction on how this year’s iteration might play out.
  • The Marlins and Pirates got together on a draft pick trade, which is both interesting and instructive for a number of reasons.

    Enhanced Box Score: Red Sox 5, Cubs 4 – April 28, 2024

Yeah, I don't know how that could have ended any other way....an in-between blooper that bounces of Dansby Swanson's glove*, which simultaneously leads to the first earned run Mark Leiter Jr. has allowed this year and a walk-off win for...

Mike Tauchman Ties the Game with an 8th-Inning, Three-Run BLAST!

Nothing about this game so far had been enjoyable. From the broadcast, to the Cubs prouduction, to all the luck seemingly going the Red Sox way. But after finally chasing Tanner Houck out of the game, the Cubs were able...

Cubs Roster Moves: Jordan Wicks (IL) and Luke Little (Iowa) Replaced by Two Relievers Out of Triple-A

As expected, Jordan Wicks is hitting the injured list with the always-dreaded left forearm strain. But he's not the only Cubs lefty on his way out the door this Sunday afternoon. Sahadev Sharma has the scoop on the three other...

Should We Have Seen Wicks’ Injury Coming? Rizzo Makes Us Smile (2x), Hicks Dealing, and Other Cubs Bullets

Cade Horton Dominates Once Again in His Latest Start

Another day, another dominant Double-A start from top Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton. The 22-year-old righty went 5.0 scoreless innings for the Tennessee Smokies, allowing five hits, no walks, and striking out six. https://twitter.com/MLBPipeline/status/1784397003340034131 There sure doesn't seem to be...

Oh, Noooo: Jordan Wicks Has Forearm Tightness and Won’t Start Tomorrow

At the end of a nice winning streak, it was easy enough to shrug off a throwaway 17-0 loss to the Red Sox. And I didn't even let Christopher Morel's tumble and early exit throw me, as he was apparently...

    Enhanced Box Score: Red Sox 17, Cubs 0 – April 27, 2024

Here's how you sum that one up: It's not too often that you see a position player pitching TAKEN OUT MID-INNING because he hit his pitch count. But that happened today. So, yeah, that did not go well. Unless, of...

Justin Steele Could Be Back Sooner Than (I) Expected (UPDATE)

And here I was thinking the only silver lining about Justin Steele's Opening Day hamstring injury was the path it cleared for Javier Assad and Ben Brown to step into the rotation. Turns out there's another positive with respect to...

Chicago Cubs Trading Garrett Cooper to the Boston Red Sox

The Chicago Cubs had seven days to trade, waive, or release Garrett Cooper after designating him for assignment this past week (making room for Matt Mervis). Because Cooper is a good Major League player, it's not necessarily a surprise that...
