Latest Mocks: Lots of Allen for Bears, but Also Trubisky and Kizer Appearances

Mock Draft Season continues to open up, with a number of first iteration mock drafts coming online (literally!) over the past week.

Checking in on the latest, and how the Bears play things in these versions …

  • At NFL.com, Daniel Jeremiah drops his first mock draft, and it’s got a familiar trio of names at the top, with Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett going to the Browns, UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky going to the 49ers, and Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen going to the Bears. LSU safety Jamal Adams, whom we’ve seen go to the Bears in another mock (and it makes sense, given the talent and the obvious need in the secondary, especially at safety) doesn’t fall very far, going number four. Of Allen, Jeremiah has high praise, noting the versatility on the line, and calling Allen, “one of the most technically sound defensive linemen I’ve ever evaluated.”

  • Meanwhile, Mel Kiper Jr. also dropped his first mock draft, and he, too, goes Garrett-Trubisky-Allen in his first three. While we’re so far off from the draft that I’d certainly not call anything a “consensus” at this point, but I do think it’s worth pointing out that most draft pundits see Garrett as the clear, overall best talent in the draft, with Allen coming in at number two. But then you have three teams at the top of the draft that have significant quarterback needs, and, with Trubisky viewed by many as the best potential NFL quarterback in this draft (including Kiper, but who ranks Trubisky only the 16th best prospect overall), it’s unsurprising to see a number of mocks go Garrett-Trubisky-Allen. Adams goes fourth for Kiper, as well, by the way.
  • NFL Draft Insider’s Jared Tokarz offers his mock, and, like Jeremiah’s and Kipers, it goes Garrett-Trubisky-Allen-Adams at the top. Interestingly, both Kiper and Tokarz also have big Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams going next, but Jeremiah doesn’t have Williams off the board until pick 15. It’ll be interesting to see, as Mock Draft Season goes on, whether that kind of stratification after the first three or four picks continues (i.e., there becomes a clear top three or four, and then the familiar wide variance in where a guy could be picked shows up from there). Also, a note for parents: if you want your kid to become a big, studly college wide receiver? Name him Mike Williams.
  • Things look a little different over at Pro Football Focus in Mock 3.0, with the 49ers electing to take Clemson QB Deshaun Watson at number two (again, after Garrett goes number one to the Browns), instead of Trubisky, whom the Bears grab at number three. You can read the write-up on each player for the distinguishing factors there, but it sounds like Trubisky’s limited experience and Watson’s good makeup are the slight tie-breaker. And, in reality, if the 49ers were really deciding between these two quarterbacks in the run-up to the draft, the separating factors may very well be things that are totally opaque to outsiders.

  • Matt Miller’s scouting notebook includes a variety of rumors and updates (the Bears, his sources indicate, were all over the college quarterbacks this year, on-hand to scout multiple games (I’d certainly hope so)), and also includes his latest mock draft. Garrett and Trubisky go one and two again, but Miller has the Bears springing for Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer, on whom Miller sounds extremely high. It was a rough year for Kizer at Notre Dame, but the physical attributes are still there. Of course, Mel Kiper recently told the Daily Herald that he believes Kizer may very well still be on the board when the Bears pick in the second round (35th overall), so cautious about reaching is warranted.
