Remembering that the Bears sent the cavalry to see Deshaun Watson’s Pro Day and didn’t do the same for Mitchell Trubisky, I’m hesitant to go overboard when I see Coach X, Coordinator Y, and Scout Z to see Prospect A.
HOWEVER, I’m intrigued by the crew sent to Alabama’s Pro Day:
#Bears OC Bill Lazor, passing game coordinator/QB coach John DeFilippo & area scout Sam Summerville were at the Alabama pro day today where QB Mac Jones was on display.

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports the Bears sent Bill Lazor, John DeFilippo, and Sam Summerville to Alabama Pro Day. And if you’re keeping score at home, that’s Chicago’s offensive coordinator, QBs Coach/Passing Game Coordinator, and lead scout for the southeastern region. In other words, the Bears sent some heavy hitters down to Tuscaloosa.
There is no shortage of talent that trio could’ve had their eyes on at this Pro Day. But seeing the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in attendance has me hoping they were keeping a close watch on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. And because we know DeFilippo has been hands-on at other Pro Days with other quarterbacks, I’d venture to guess that watching Jones was a high priority.
Jones was a baller for the national champion Crimson Tide. He threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns in a title-winning season. On an individual level, Jones won the Davey O’Brien, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, and Manning Award last year. Jones also earned Consensus All-American and first-team All-SEC honors for his efforts. Set aside the fact that Jones was a one-year starter at a program loaded with NFL talent. Putting up *THOSE* numbers is straight up bonkers. And frankly, he deserves a deep dive from Chicago’s scouting eyes.
The Bears already met with Jones at the Senior Bowl, so it’s not as if they are unfamiliar with the Alabama prospect. And that Summerville was in attendance is a nugget that also intrigues me. Chicago has hit on high-profile SEC talents such as Roquan Smith and Eddie Jackson with Summerville leading the charge. So if Summerville, Lazor, and DeFilippo like what they see, I imagine there could be a push to draft Jones.
Teams needing quarterback help should be going above and beyond to see if Jones is the truth. Ideally, that’s what the Bears are doing with Lazor, DeFilippo, and Summerville in attendance.
