Now that the NFL has revealed which teams are getting compensatory picks (hey, the Bears got one!), each of the league’s 32 teams know what they are working with on draft weekend. With that box checked, we could be getting closer to Bears GM Ryan Poles and one of his contemporaries hashing out a trade for the top overall pick.
There has been a buzz building toward Chicago’s football team trading the top spot in the upcoming NFL Draft. And it isn’t getting any quieter. Not with Chicago sports media personality David Kaplan sharing what he heard from a current NFL assistant who let it be known how badly teams want that pick and what trade compensation could look like:
“He fully believes they’re going to get a pick in 2023, a flip. They’ll give up one and the team they’re trading one to will give them their pick. And then they’re going to get a ’24 and ’25 first-round pick. And he said, and I would think there will be either a second or third-round pick and maybe some later picks. He said the Bears hold all the cards.
“There are teams ready, as he put it to me, to move heaven and earth to get that pick from the Chicago Bears.”
Ooh wee! It sounds like it could be a doozy for the Bears. Poles could get a treasure trove of draft picks coming his way. After all, it sounds like he is making a big ask for teams inquiring about the selection. Because it’s not as if this is the first time something like this has been presented. In recent weeks, there have been reports of “significant, significant” interest in the pick.
That’s not surprising. Neither is word that teams are “scrambling” to get it. Can’t say I blame ’em after seeing those QBs show out at the Combine. There are even whispers that the Bears were “long down the road” of trading that pick. Heck, even Poles himself laid out that he feels he can get multiple future first-round picks for trading out from the No. 1 spot. In other words, this all vibes with what Kaplan is reporting.
All in all, it sounds like the Bears are in a position to get a haul of picks for that top pick. And it could happen sooner than expected.
