More on Caleb’s Dinner, Moore is Excited, Fields Gets New Number, and Other Bears Bullets

I’m off this weekend to stand up in a friend’s wedding. So I’d like to apologize ahead of time for a shortened version of Bullets today. Surely, no one in the wedding party will have strong opinions about what the Chicago Bears should do with the No. 9 pick. 😏

  • Over at NBC Sports Chicago, more details have emerged from Caleb Williams’ meetings with the Bears. Among the most notable nuggets for me are that around 10 Bears staffers flew out to Southern California for Williams’ pro day workout. As for the recent dinner, wide receiver DJ Moore was among those in attendance.
  • If you’ll recall, DJ Moore was a staunch Justin Fields supporter. And yet, Moore is down to work with the new guy. He said as much during a recent visit on 670 The Score: “Whoever we get, I’m going to be excited to work with. Business is business.” Moving forward, business figures to include Moore getting a whole bunch of targets from Caleb Williams. And I imagine that’ll be an absolute treat to watch (and you might feel the same way unless you’re a defensive back reading this).
  • Justin Fields’ stats while targeting DJ Moore last year: 72/101 (71.3%), 1,109 yards, 8 TD (7.9 TD%), 1 INT (0.9 INT%), 11.0 yards/attempt, 129.5 passer rating. The way I see it, if Moore can elevate Fields’ passing game then he can do the same for Caleb Williams.
  • Speaking of Fields, the former Chicago Bears QB1 has a new number:
  • H2M doesn’t give off the same energy as H1M. Nevertheless, it is still a fresh start for Fields in Pittsburgh. And I’m rooting for him to succeed even though he is no longer with the Bears. May the Force be with you and all that jazz.
  • While old friends are on our mind: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports former Bears center Sam Mustipher has signed a free agent deal with the Denver Broncos. It is a one-year deal for Mustipher, who will join Alex Forsyth and Luke Wattenberg on the Denver center depth chart. Mustipher played 52 games (42 starts) for the Bears from 2020-22 and was the team’s primary center in his final two years with the team. The Notre Dame product spent the 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens, starting two of the nine games he appeared in for the AFC North champs.
  • Windy City Gridiron’s Jacob Infante interviews Central Michigan punter Jake Walrath ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft. Walrath is one of this year’s best draft-eligible punters. And considering Trenton Gill’s struggles last year, the Bears should be kicking the tires on all of their punting options. Yes, I realize they signed Corliss Waitman. But I won’t have to use my most vivid parts of my imagination to see the team churning and burning through possible options at the position.
  • Poynter writers Tom Jones and Annie Aguilar opine that the NFL is sabotaging NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” program and are trying to figure out why. I can’t say I blame them for holding this stance. The brain drain of talent in recent years and move to Los Angeles has things feeling off. For what it’s worth, the show is still tremendous. But it feels as iff odd things are happening for no particular reason.
  • March Madness is over and the Final Four is this weekend. North Carolina State’s surprise run has introduced Wolfpack star DJ Burns to a whole new audience. And among the football fans following NC State’s Final Four run are folks who envision a future for Burns that features time on the gridiron and not the hardwood. For what it’s worth, Burns said he isn’t interested in playing football. However, PFT’s Mike Florio isn’t convinced. If I had to guess, Burns (6-9, 275) will take the most financially lucrative path that also happens to be the one that doesn’t come with risking CTE.
  • HAPPY FRIDAY! The Bleacher Nation Newsletter

  • The Los Angeles Dodgers are in town and are giving off weird vibes. For instance, there is a report about a fan who caught Shohei Ohtani’s first Dodger homer being “pressured” and “swindled” by the team. Yikes!
  • Over at BN Blackhawks, Matt writes Alex Vlasic has been good — but HOW good might surprise you.
  • Chicago sports teams rostering Connor Bedard, Caleb Williams, and Angel Reese would make this place the epicenter of young stars on the rise. So … how do we complete the trifecta?
