2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Tournament History & Trends
The Waste Management Phoenix Open, known for its raucous crowds and electrifying atmosphere, boasts a rich history dating back to 1932. Originally named the Arizona Open, it teed off at the Phoenix Country Club, marking the start of a journey that would see name changes, venue shifts, and a steady rise in popularity.
Early iterations saw the tournament bounce between various names and locations, including the Western Open, the Ben Hogan Invitational, and the Phoenix Open. Then finally in 1987, it found its permanent home at the TPC Scottsdale, where it has thrived for over 35 years. Interestingly, aside from TPC Sawgrass, TPC Scottsdale holds the record for the longest continuous hosting of a PGA TOUR event at a Tournament Players Club.
Throughout its journey, the tournament has witnessed iconic moments including Tom Pernice Jr. achieving the first-ever double eagle in 1990, Tiger Woods’ ace on 16 in 1997 which sent the crowd into a frenzy, and Mark Calcavecchia setting the record for the lowest 72-hole score in 2001, later to be matched by Phil Mickelson in 2013.
Of course, nothing is more recognizable at the WMPO than the 16th hole and its stadium seating which always entertains and presents amazing moments annually. The event’s popularity has soared through the years and continues to attract record-breaking crowds that have cemented its reputation as one of the most vibrant tournaments on the PGA TOUR.
Part of what makes the Waste Management Open such an anticipated event is how competitive the weekend turns out to be. Winning here requires playing really good golf as evidenced by every single winner since 2000 scoring 14-under or better. Only 5 victors over that stretch won by more than 2 strokes, with 14 of the last 17 doing so by 1-stroke or requiring a playoff. Simply put, the 2024 Waste Management Open is destined to have the audience on the edge of their seat the entire weekend.

2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open Favorites
Scottie Scheffler +500
Scheffler has established himself as one of, if not the best current players here at TPC Scottsdale. He’s the two-time defending champion, finished T7th back in 2021, and has finished -16 or better in the last three Waste Management Phoneix Open events. Scottie is also off to a hot start in 2024 placing T5 at The Sentry, T17 while shooting -21 at The AMEX, and T6 at the shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this past weekend. He’ll be tough to beat and probably one of the most popular Waste Management Open Best Bets.
Justin Thomas +1000
JT has seemingly returned to top form this year having posted results of T3 (AMEX) and T6 (Pebble Beach) in his first two events. Thomas has never won the Waste Management Open but he’s played incredibly well here. Justin has finished each of the previous six WMPOs at 11-under, and he’s placed outside the top 10 just once over that span. JT is a threat to win everywhere, especially when he’s as hot as he is now.
2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open Best Bets
Our friends over at Betsperts Golf have come up with a couple of their 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open Best Bets and where to find them. Here they are.
J.T. Poston Top 20 +140 (FanDuel)
Hasn’t played here for the past couple of seasons but did manage an 11th-place finish in 2021. His current form has been hot though, producing the 3rd most total strokes gained over the past month and finishing in the top 20 all four times. His well-rounded game should suit him well at TPC Scottsdale.

Akshay Bhatia T40 -110 (BetRivers)
We shouldn’t be surprised when we see someone who just turned 22 last month take a major step forward, but the early returns on Akshay Bhatia’s broomstick putter are exceptional. After losing 0.58 strokes per round putting last season, Bhatia is gaining 1.02 strokes per round through four events this season. It’s a small sample and unsustainable, but the rest of his game is strong and ascending, so if he’s no longer a liability on the greens, he’s going to contend more.
He’s finished T14 or better in three of his past four starts and ranks out extremely well in numerous key metrics this week. His driver is a weapon with plus distance and accuracy. He ranks second in this week’s field in total driving over the past six months and 14th in Good Drive, the two key off-the-tee metrics that I’m focusing on this week. His distance advantage will help him on the Par-5s this week, but this Par-71 layout offers an extra Par-4, and Bhatia ranks 12th in the field in Par-4 average over the past 36 rounds.
A win might be a stretch, but he’s proving that the moment and environment aren’t too big for him. I expect we’ll see him show out well this week, and I love the finishing position market prices for him as well.

Ryan Fox T40 +163 (BetRivers)
First off, Fox is the 34th-ranked player in the entire world. He has won multiple worldwide events. He simply lacks experience on PGA Tour courses that he has never played before such as here at TPC Scottsdale.
On a course that demands “Total Driving” ability, players with both distance and accuracy to avoid water hazards and desert waste areas will have a huge advantage. Fox is one of the best in the field off the tee and has the all-around game both around the greens and on approach to give himself a shot to not only finish inside the top 40 but to also contend throughout the weekend. – Ron Klos
