Pre-registration for North Carolina sports betting kicks off this Friday, March 1st. Bettors in the state will be able to register early with sportsbooks to score bonuses before launch day on March 11th. If you are a first-time bettor, you might not know much about the different bet types. Here’s a look at some popular bet types and more for NC sports betting.
Popular Bet Types
Sports betting operators have a long list of markets available for betting. There are traditional bets, props, and more. It can be overwhelming. Here’s a look at some of the most popular bet types and how they work.
Moneyline
A moneyline bet is a wager on the outright winner of a game. You are betting on a team or an individual to win. For moneyline bets, the favorite has negative odds and the underdog has positive odds. For example, UNC basketball might be a -150 favorite vs Duke who is a +155 underdog.
If UNC wins, a $150 bet on the Tar Heels wins $100. If Duke wins, a $100 bet on Duke wins $155.
Spread
A spread bet is a wager on the point margin in a game. This is a way for sportsbooks to even the odds when a team is a major favorite. For example, Duke might be a -11.5 favorite in men’s basketball. For Duke to cover the spread, the Blue Devils have to win by 12 points or more.
The odds for spread bets are usually around -110. That means a $110 bet wins $100. The greater the negative number, the more you have to bet to get a decent payout. If the odds are -120, a $120 bet wins $100.
Total
A total bet is commonly referred to as an over/under. You are betting on the combined point total of both teams. For example, let’s say the total for a Panthers vs Bucs game is 47.5. If you bet the over, you need 48 points or more scored in the game. If the final score is 31-20, you would win because that’s 51 total points scored in the game.
Prop
A prop bet is a wager on an outcome within a game. There are all sorts of props including game, team, and player. For example, you can wager on how many passing yards Bryce Young will have in a game. His yardage might be set at over/under 255.5 yards. If you bet the under, he has to throw for 255 yards or less for you to win.
Props are extremely popular because of the large variety available including first TD scorer, first basket scorer, player point totals, and more.
Parlay
A parlay is when you combine multiple bets into one wager. With each bet you add, your odds are boosted but the probability of winning goes down. In a parlay, you need every single bet you add to win.
For example, you might pick four NFL teams to win on a Sunday. If any of the teams lose, you lose the entire bet.
