At first, Beverley’s potential addition to the Bulls roster appeared strictly fan-driven, but as the time wore on, the possibility of the front office making an offer became more and more realistic. And now, we know they have reached out for a meeting. Sweet.
Beverley, 30, provides the Bulls with exactly what they are looking for, an aggressive veteran presence that can focus on facilitating the ball. Having grown into a strong role player the past season on the Clippers, he can easily act as a bridge between new Bulls point guard Coby White and his eventual starting minutes.
It also doesn’t hurt that the Bulls need shooters (Beverley’s 38.0 career three-point field goal percentage can help check off that box). In general, it’s hard to deny his fit for the Bulls over the next couple of seasons, something that Lu dug into more with a previous post.
The biggest issue now, like many things, comes down to whether or not he is worth the price. After a successful campaign with the Clippers last season and an attention-grabbing defensive job on Kevin Durant during the first round of the playoffs, teams around the league have also been rumored to want in on the Beverley sweepstakes.
As his interest took a leap forward, so did his asking price, and Beverley is now reportedly seeking a three-year $40 million deal. Whether the Bulls want to spend a little over half their cap space this offseason (about $23 million) on Beverley is up for questioning, but it appears as though the team is willing to talk it out with this latest meeting in LA.
With more teams than just the Bulls and Mavericks having been rumored to express interest (*cough* the Lakers *cough), it feels like more meetings will be scheduled with Beverley as the 5:00 p.m. CT free agency deadline creeps up. Let’s have some fun!
