What to Watch For …
• Ayo Dosunmu is coming off a very productive performance against the San Antonio Spurs. The second-round pick sparked the Bulls’ 22-point comeback effort with his pesky defensive play, adding four steals to the box score. One of the NCAA’s top scorers last season, he has struggled to get into a rhythm on the offensive end with Marko Simonovic and Patrick Williams doing a lot of the heavy lifting, but he used his defensive effort to set up multiple transition buckets for himself on Tuesday. Expect to see him try to play with a similar mentality today.
• With that said, Summer League is all about trying things out, so I would love if head coach Damian Cotter let Dosunmu play the lead guard role for a handful of possessions. Dosunmu has the length and ballhandling ability to do some deadly scoring in the halfcourt, and running him in the pick-and-roll with Marko Simonovic could eventually mirror what we see for the Bulls down the road.
• Patrick Williams has taken 20 shots in two straight for the first time as a pro. Unless the coaching staff decides to give him a breather today, I would expect to see much of the same from the rookie. He finished Tuesday’s game with 30 points and 7 rebounds with four-made 3’s. The shot selection was also arguably the most versatile I’ve ever seen from him. Today, however, I’d like to see an even greater emphasis on driving to the rim. Williams has the strength and speed to be a real threat around the basket, he just needs to tighten his handles and go up even stronger.
• Devon Dotson really struggled to get going against the Spurs despite a really strong Game 1 in Summer League where he scored a team-high 16 points with 11 rebounds. Let’s see if the 2020 undrafted free agent can get back in a flow this time around.
• Simi Shittu, who has played for the Windy City Bulls and in the preseason with Chicago, has also failed to make his presence felt thus far. I was high on him coming into this Summer League, believing he could even have a shot to land the Bulls second two-way contract. We still can not rule that out, but the power forward is going to have to show a little more physicality and spark during his handful of minutes off the bench.
