The NBA announced on Wednesday the 10 finalists for the 2022-23 NBA Care’s Bob Lanier Community Assist Award. Appearing on that list is the Chicago Bulls’ Alex Caruso, who also happened to win the monthly Community Assist Award back in January.
In a short video describing Caruso’s nomination, the NBA Cares’ team recognized the Bulls guard for his work in fighting food insecurity in the Chicagoland area. The award back in January noted the same thing, specifically mentioning a donation of $10,000 to Dion’s Chicago Team, which the NBA matched in an effort to make 20 families food secure for 2023.
Caruso has been nominated along with the following players: Philly’s James Harden and Tyrese Maxey, Milwaukee’s Pat Connaughton and Brook Lopez, New York’s Julius Randle, Boston’s Marcus Smart, Phoenix’s Cameron Payne, Dallas’ Dwight Powell, and San Antonio’s Keita Bates-Diop.
The previous honor also mentioned Caruso’s work with the Mikva Challenge’s Neighborhood Leadership Initiative and Chicago Public Schools. He invited kids and their families from the former organization for a full gameday experience at the United Center, while throwing a party for golf teams part of the CPS system.
If he takes home the official seasonal award, Caruso will receive $25,000 from the NBA to give to an organization of his choice. The winner is decided by a fan vote, as well as an executive panel. Voting opened for fans on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. CT and will close on Sunday, May 21, per NBA Communications.
I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see Caruso recognized with another piece of hardware. He’s already received his first-ever All-Defensive Team award for his on-court efforts, so now it’s time to acknowledge him for all the good he’s doing off the court.
