Carlos Zambrano missed the team’s flight to Atlanta this week, and I guess that’s kind of one of those big deals (that isn’t really a big deal).
Manager Lou Piniella said the Cubs would handle the discipline of Carlos Zambrano “internally,” which means he’s already dealt with it. Piniella had a 20-minute meeting with Zambrano Tuesday about missing the team flight to Atlanta without informing the team.
He declined to discuss it on Wednesday, but team sources said it was not the first time Zambrano had blown off the team charter without telling Piniella or anyone. Piniella stressed the team concept to Zambrano, but whether or not he was actually listening is anyone’s guess. He will not make Zambrano apologize to the team.
Zambrano laughed off the Tribune story, saying “You want to go find a story? Go to Afghanistan.” Hardball.
So Zambrano isn’t friends with the rest of the team. Meh. Just pitch well, and I don’t care if you all hate each other.
Oh, and in case you were worried: nothing will actually come of this that you will notice on the field. Z will pitch as scheduled.
