Catching You Up on the Holiday Weekend: Soler, Schwarber, Ruggiano, Turner, More

bn baseball featureDid you go on a three-day-long holiday bender? Start smoking the ribs on Friday only to discover that the recipe demanded a crisp 74 hours of cooking time? Did you go live life?

Good news: here’s a quick recap to catch you up on what you may have missed this busy holiday weekend.

Friday, August 29

  • In case you missed the big news in the afternoon, the Cubs will try to keep first round pick Kyle Schwarber behind the plate going into next year. Obviously they believe in his ability back there, much to many folks’ surprise.
  • The other big news of the afternoon, I’d say, is the revelation that the Cubs will indeed be going with a six-man rotation in September.
  • Jed Hoyer offered another consideration when thinking on veteran additions in the offseason.
  • The Cubs beat up on the Cardinals 7-2, and Jorge Soler hit two mammoth home runs.
  • Saturday, August 30

  • Justin Ruggiano’s season is over.
  • There are continued positive signals about the Cubs’ near-term future.
  • The Cubs split their doubleheader against the Cardinals, winning game one and losing game two.
  • Sunday, August 31

  • The Cubs have a few minor league affiliates in the playoffs.
  • Anthony Rizzo’s back continues to keep him out of the lineup.
  • The waiver trade deadline came and went without too much sexy activity. The A’s picked up Adam Dunn. That’s about it.
  • The Cubs dropped the series finale in St. Louis in very Cubes-like fashion.
  • Monday, September 1 (Labor Day)

  • The Tennessee Smokies, unfortunately, were eliminated from postseason contention.
  • September call-ups are on their way, including very likely Eric Jokisch. Blake Parker was the first call-up.
  • The Cubs/Cardinals rivalry may be coming back to life. Good.
  • Arismendy Alcantara hit a bomb of a homer, and I then talked about how impressive he’s been.
  • The Cubs beat the Brewers behind a great Jacob Turner start, and big offense from Jorge Soler, Welington Castillo, and Luis Valbuena, among others.
