Now That’s Using Your Head – How to Turn a Blooper Into a Triple Play

Triple plays, not unlike the straight steal of home, are one of the rarest in baseball. They require the perfect confluence of events, timing, players, location, etc … so they’re really just not seen that often.

The triple play below, though, is so much more than that. Not only are three outs recorded, the reason is simultaneously funny and hard to believe.

Check it out:

He really used his head on that one! (Sorry, I had to).

There were men on first and second and no outs in the inning in that 2011 game between the Nashville Sounds and Omaha Storm Chasers. The pitch is delivered and gets rocked into center field. Logan Schafer gloves it, but it pops right out of the bottom of his mitt, bounces off his head and he comes up with the ball!

The runners on first and second couldn’t believe he’d caught it, thinking it was dropped when it first came out of his glove, and had already made their way past the next bags. They were promptly doubled and tripled off – a most unusual play, indeed!
