Ah, the weird games. The Cubs have had plenty of them over the years, but the ones that really seem to stick with you as “weird” tend involve certain signposts: extra innings, a very late night, everybody getting into the game, unbelievable plays and decisions, pitchers playing defense, position players pitching, and the like.

The most famous in recent memory is probably The John Baker Game, which not only marked the longest game in Cubs history (6 hours, 27 minutes – “Fiesta Forever!”), but it was also the first time a position player was the winning pitcher in Cubs history. And not only did Baker get that win after pitching the top of the 16th inning, he scored the winning, walk-off run in the bottom of the frame. Weird and wonderful, indeed, and an iconic fist pump:

This year’s installment of truly weird and wonderful came up in Milwaukee back in May, when the Cubs and Brewers took a 1-1 game all the way to the 13th inning. The Cubs didn’t score until the 9th inning to send the game into extra innings, and it got zany from there. Heck, the game got so ridiculous that, at one point, Trevor Cahill was used as a pinch hitter with the winning run on second base.

Travis Wood had to work out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the 12th inning (featuring multiple position players moving all around the diamond, gloves being switched, and more butt-clenching than I care to admit). Then, because the Cubs were long out of position players, Wood batted with the bases loaded in the 13th, and drew a walk to give the Cubs their winning run:

That was a lot of fun, even if I remember that I had to be up literally three hours later by the time that game ended. Worth it.
