Cubs Minor League Daily: The Rain Has Come, and the Rain is Coming

Every once in a while a nationwide weather system so large appears that it can wipe out the Cubs’ entire minor league slate in one deluge of rain. This weekend may be setting up for that sort of an event. If the weather maps are to be believed, the entire Midwest is scheduled to be soaked this weekend, with rain totals breaking six inches in some areas. Iowa, Tennessee, and South Bend are likely to be impacted. Myrtle Beach is safely out of the way, but the Carolina League is largely coastal, so rainouts are always a risk for the Pelicans.

Nothing is certain, of course, but don’t be surprised if we do not have a whole lot of minor league action this weekend.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Colorado Springs 7, Iowa 0
The Cubs had seven hits in this one.

  • Aaron Brooks: 4 IP, 6 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Zac Rosscup: 1 IP, 2 K

  • Bijan Rademacher: 2 for 3, BB
  • Ozzie Martinez: 2 for 4
  • Aaron Brooks: 1 for 1, 2B
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Mississippi 8, Tennesse 7
The Smokies piled on run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, but needed one more.

  • Preston Morrison: 3.2 IP, 6 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K
  • Daury Torrez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K
  • Ryan McNeil: 1 IP, 1 K
  • Charcer Burks: 0 for 3, 2 BB

  • Yasiel Balaguert: 2 for 5

  • Jason Vosler: 3 for 5
  • Andrew Ely: 1 for 4, 2B
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Myrtle Beach 9, Lynchburg 6
The two teams swapped big innings; the Pelicans had the bigger one.

  • Tom Hatch: 4 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Pedro Araujo: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • James Norwood: 1 IP, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Carlos Sepulveda: 2 for 4, BB
  • Bryant Flete: 2 for 4, BB
  • Tyler Alamo: 2 for 5, HR
  • Daniel Spingola: 2 for 5
  • Robert Garcia: 2 for 4, 2B

    Low A: South Bend Cubs

    The Cubs were rained out.

    Other Notes

  • Ian Happ was again batting leadoff for Iowa.
  • I remember that early last season a South Bend outfielder got off to a very good start and drew a few mentions in the Daily, but tapered off as the season wore on. That outfielder, Daniel Spingola, is off to a good start again. Now with Myrtle Beach, Spingola has an OPS of .923 with ten walks and sixteen strikeouts through his first twenty games.
