Cubs Minor League Daily: Ian Happ Hits the Disabled List

We have not seen Ian Happ play baseball since April 28, and we have not seen him homer since April 27, and yesterday we learned why.

Happ has been moved to the 7-day disabled list with a bruised left thumb, and third baseman Chris Dominguez activated from the DL in his place. I’m not certain when Happ is expected back or just how severe the bruised thumb is, but I suspect that is the reason he has missed a few games lately.

On the other hand, this does give us a chance to take a look at minor league veteran Chris Dominguez. Dominguez, 30, is a former third round pick who was drafted by the Giants in 2009 and has spent most of career in that organization. He reached the majors for eight games with San Francisco in 2014, and for 14 games with Cincinnati in 2015. Last year he played in the Red Sox Organization. He has put up some good power numbers in his career, but his walk and strikeout rates are less encouraging.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
New Orleans 5, Iowa 3
Despite eleven total hits, Iowa scored just one run in the final eight innings.

  • Seth Frankoff: 5 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 K
  • Rob Zastryzny: 2.2 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Jeimer Candelario: 1 for 2, 2B
  • Chris Dominguez: 3 for 4, 2B
  • Victor Caratini: 2 for 4
  • Chesny Young: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Osvaldo Martinez: 2 for 4
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies had the day off.

    High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Frederick 2, Myrtle Beach 1
Based on the score, you would never believe the wind was blowing out to left at 23 MPH.

  • Ryan Kellogg: 6 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 1 K
  • Eddy Martinez: 1 for 2, BB
  • Adonis Paula: 2 for 3, HR
  • Daniel Spingola: 1 for 3, 3B
  • Connor Myers: 1 for 3, 2B
  • [adinserter block=”2″]

    Frederick 8, Myrtle Beach 2
For this one, the wind was out to center at 20 MPH.

  • Kyle Miller: 2.2 IP, 7 R (3 ER), 7 H, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Tommy Thorpe: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 K
  • Bryant Flete: 1 for 3, 2B
  • P.J. Higgins: 2 for 3
  • Adonis Paula: 1 for 3, HR
  • Robert Garcia: 1 for 3, HR
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 7, Kane County 6
A run scoring wild pitch capped off a four run rally in the bottom of the ninth.

  • Jose Paulino: 6 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 7 K
  • Marc Huberman: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • Zack Short: 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB
  • Yeiler Peguero: 1 for 5, 3B
  • Luis Ayala: 1 for 1, 2B
  • Darryl Wilson: 2 for 4, HR
  • Other Notes

  • Zack Short was taken in the 17th round last June, and that means he was one of the first position players to be taken by the Cubs in that pitching-heavy draft. In his first full season with South Bend, his early season line of .253/.400/.494 with 4 homers and 6 steals is starting to suggest that Short may have a brighter future than your typical 17th round pick. Keep an eye on him.
