The Cubs have been getting spanked lately, and their challenge doesn’t ease up tonight with Yu Darvish on the mound for San Diego. Outside of three rough outings (basically one each month), Darvish has been very good all season, pitching into the sixth inning on all but one occasion.

- Patrick Wisdom, 3B
- Yan Gomes, C
- Nico Hoerner, SS
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Jonathan Villar, 2B
SP: Justin Steele, LHP
Righties have been hitting Darvish better than lefties this season, but the opposite is true for his career, so I’m not sure there’s much to be gleaned there. And, again, it’s not like the Cubs are really playing the matchups for the marginal benefit this season. It’s basically the same group everyday, with just a decision at second base (Nick Madrigal or Andrelton Simmons or Jonathan Villar) and DH (Willson Contreras or Rafael Ortega).
Today, it’s Villar at second and Contreras at DH, which opens up catcher for Yan Gomes. Other than that, it’s the usual suspects in their usual places.
