WR3 in Fantasy Football

When it comes to a fantasy football draft, a WR3 is a wide receiver who is ranked between 25th-36th at their position. This is the third tier of wide receivers. WR1 is ranked from 1st-12th while WR2 is ranked from 13th-24th at the receiver position. Wideouts in the WR1 group are expected to score the most fantasy points.

The same terminology can be used to rank other players at different positions. Quarterbacks, or QB, would be listed as QB1 while running backs, or RB, would be listed as RB1, RB2, etc.

WR on Your Fantasy Team

WR3 might take on other meanings in your fantasy league. It could refer to the third wide receiver on a depth chart of an NFL team. It could also refer to the third-best wide receiver on the team of a fantasy manager. It’s important to understand what is meant by WR3 when you are making decisions in your fantasy football league.

Also, keep in mind the type of league you are when it comes to scoring. If you are in a PPR league, that means players receive points per reception. If this is the case, wide receivers, tight ends, and pass-catching running backs take on bigger roles because they earn points for receptions on top of touchdowns and yards.

What You Want From a WR3

There are several traits you are looking for when it comes to WR3. First off, you want a player who has the potential to move up the depth chart. This would mean a younger player or even a rookie that you expect to get a certain amount of targets per game or you can see them in a breakout role with the offense.

Also, you want to look at pass-heavy teams. Do you research in the offseason to take a look at pass yards per game from last season as well as other metrics. A pass-heavy team helps ensure your WR3 can end up getting a decent amount of targets throughout the season even if they don’t move up to the top of the depth chart.

On top of that, since a WR3 is likely to get fewer targets, you are looking for big play ability if you are going to take one in the draft. This way they can be valuable to your fantasy football team even if they don’t get that many targets. Big plays in terms of touchdowns or yards at the wide receiver position score quite a few fantasy points per game.
