What Exactly is GPP in DFS?
GPP stands for guaranteed prize pools. It’s a type of daily fantasy sports contest that has a specific total prize amount regardless of how many people join to play. GPPs have most of the big prize payouts being dished out to those who finish at the top of the contest.
The large payouts on websites like DraftKings and FanDuel get people excited about these guaranteed prize pools and it usually leads to thousands of DFS players competing by building their lineups.
GPPs vs Cash Games
GPPs have a different strategy than a cash game. Cash games can include head-to-head matchups, 50/50 contests, double-ups, and more. In cash games, almost half of the contestants end up winning money. So if you enter a daily fantasy football 50/50 contest, you just need to finish in the top half to win and have some money end up in your bankroll.
For guaranteed prize pools, the odds of winning money are around 1 in 4. This leads to different strategies in lineup construction in a GPP tournament because you have to take more risks compared to other matchup contests or cash game lineups.
GPP and DFS Strategy
Your GPP lineup usually should consist of high-upside players. If it’s an NFL pool, you want running backs, quarterbacks, wide receivers, etc. that have the potential to have a huge game. To win in a prize pool, you will need some monster outlier performances.
Also, you can’t just stack your roster with the players who have the best projections. Many other entrants will be doing the same thing. You need something that will help you stand out with your single entry compared to potentially thousands of other people.
If you are in the smaller tournaments, you don’t have to be as contrarian to end up on top or win some money.
